The Context – Jordan’s Lost Season {#context-63}

The 1985-86 season was supposed to be Jordan’s coming‑out party after a spectacular rookie year. He had averaged 28.2 points per game and won Rookie of the Year. But in the third game of the season, Jordan broke his left foot. He missed 64 games.

The Bulls limped to a 30-52 record. They barely made the playoffs. Jordan returned just in time for the postseason, but he was rusty. He was not supposed to be a factor against the greatest team of the era.

For Sportsphere24 Updates, this made his 63-point explosion even more remarkable. He was not fully healthy. He had not played consistently for months. And he was about to face the most intimidating defence in the league.

The 1985-86 Boston Celtics – A Dynasty at Its Peak {#celtics-dynasty}

The 1985-86 Boston Celtics are widely considered one of the greatest teams in NBA history.

CategoryStatistic
Regular season record67-15
Home record40-1 (best in NBA history at the time)
Point differential+9.4 per game
Hall of Famers on roster5 (Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson, Bill Walton)
CoachK.C. Jones (Hall of Fame)

The Celtics had size (Parish, McHale, Walton), shooting (Bird, Danny Ainge), defence (Johnson, Dennis Johnson) and depth. They had lost only one game at home all season. They were heavily favoured to sweep the young Bulls.

For Sportsphere24 Updates, the stage was set for a mismatch. No one predicted what came next.

Game 1 – 49 Points and a Warning {#game-1-49}

On 18 April 1986, Game 1 of the first‑round series. Jordan scored 49 points. He made 16 of 36 field goals and 17 of 20 free throws. He added 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

The Bulls lost 123-108. But the Celtics were stunned. A rookie (essentially) had just hung 49 on the best defence in the league.

Larry Bird’s reaction after Game 1: “He’s incredible. He’s the most exciting player in the game. But we’ll be ready for him in Game 2.”

They were not ready.

Game 2 – The 63-Point Masterpiece {#game-2-63}

On 20 April 1986, at the Boston Garden, Michael Jordan delivered the greatest playoff scoring performance in NBA history.

The numbers:

CategoryStatistic
Points63 (NBA playoff record)
Field goals made/attempted22 of 41 (53.7%)
Free throws made/attempted19 of 21 (90.5%)

Minutes played53 (double overtime)

The game went to double overtime. Jordan played 53 minutes. He was guarded by Dennis Johnson – a six‑time All‑Defensive First Team selection and one of the best perimeter defenders in history. It did not matter.

The defining sequence: Late in regulation, Jordan drove baseline, hung in the air longer than physics should allow and laid the ball off the glass over two Celtics defenders. The Boston Garden crowd gasped. They were watching something they had never seen before.

The Box Score – Numbers That Still Amaze {#box-score-63}

Robert Parish15

Key stat: Jordan scored more points than four of the five Celtics starters combined.

Another key stat: Jordan attempted 41 field goals – the most in a playoff game since Wilt Chamberlain’s 48-point game in 1962.

For Sportsphere24 Updates, the 63-point game is the greatest individual playoff performance relative to the quality of the opponent. He did this against five Hall of Famers.

The Quote – “God Disguised as Michael Jordan” {#larry-bird-quote}

After Game 2, Larry Bird walked into the Celtics locker room and told his teammates: “We got lucky. We won. But that was God disguised as Michael Jordan. He is the most exciting, awesome player in the game today.”

Bird was not given to hyperbole. He was a trash talker, a competitor, a man who hated losing. For him to say this about a 23‑year‑old who had just destroyed his defence was the ultimate compliment.

The full quote: “I think it’s just God disguised as Michael Jordan. He is the most awesome player in the NBA. He was just unbelievable. I didn’t think anyone could do what he did against us.”

For Sportsphere24 Updates, the “God disguised” quote became the defining description of Jordan’s otherworldly talent.

The Aftermath – Respect from Legends {#aftermath-63}

PlayerQuote
Larry Bird“He is the most exciting, awesome player in the game today.”
Kevin McHale“I’ve never seen anything like it. He was unstoppable.”
Dennis Johnson“I was right there. I couldn’t stop him.”
Bob Cousy (Celtics legend)“He’s the greatest athlete I have ever seen.”

The Bulls lost the series in three games (swept). But Jordan had earned the respect of the champions. The Celtics would later admit they were terrified every time he touched the ball.

For Sportsphere24 Updates, the 63-point game was Jordan’s official arrival. He did not need to win the series. He had already won something more important: the admission from the best team in the world that they could not stop him.
